TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. Scientists in London have found that walking backwards improves short-term memory for about 10 minutes. So if you see someone at the gym walking backwards on the treadmill, donât bother them. Theyâre probably trying to remember something super important.
In todayâs Naptown Scoop:
Paddle Rack Permits Open
Children and Families Success Grant
Navy Football Predictions
Letâs get to it.

Apply now: Children and Families Success Grant đś
The kids are alright. Itâs what we all like to think about our communityâs youth, isnât it? If youâre part of a program supporting Annapolisâ youth, you can apply for funding through the Fiscal Year 2026 Children and Families Success Grant. Applications opened last week and close July 26.
These grants are available for any nonprofit program that:
â
Is physically located in Annapolis
â
Offers structured, adult-supervised activities for youth
â
Builds physical, emotional, social, behavioral, or intellectual capacities
Your sports, arts, STEM, or similar program could get up to $10K â the city plans to award at least five grants, and final decisions will be made in August. Get details and apply.
WRNR is Back on the Air đ¤đ¸
This feels almost as good as when Billy Corgan got the original Smashing Pumpkins back together in 2018. WRNR is back on the air, bringing us our daily fix of U2, Tom Petty, Dave Matthews Band, Wilco, and other familiar favorites. Youâll also hear from up-and-comers, so you can brag to your friends that youâve been listening to them for ages when they make it big.
One thing thatâs different? The frequency. While I drove to high school listening to WRNR on 103.1 FM, todayâs high school hipsters will listen on 93.5 FM. Itâll also be on 810 AM and WRNR.com. The official launch is July 4. Which is perfect â so we can sing along to independent radio on Independence Day. đşđ¸ Let the good times roll!
Naval Academy Class of 2029 Arrives for I-Day âď¸
A monumental moment for midshipmen is coming up. Itâs the emotionally charged event called Induction Day, or âI-Dayâ. This Thursday, June 26, about 1,200 young men and women report to Alumni Hall as the Naval Academy Class of 2029. Starting at 6 AM, incoming plebes (freshmen) go through stations like haircuts, physical measurements, medical exams, uniform issue, and saluting instruction.
The day ends with the Oath of Office ceremony and an emotional goodbye. Once the ceremonyâs over, the kids-turned-mids will march into Bancroft Hall. After the doors slam shut, Plebe Summerâs begun and they wonât see Mom and Dad until August.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Chick-fil-A asks County to postpone hearings amid traffic concerns
Ok, so you love Chick-fil-A just as much as the rest of us. But do you want one in your neighborhood? This is the point Arnold residents made when the restaurant chain announced it would be opening up its first drive-through only operation in Arnold Station. The Office of Planning and Zoning was set to start up a series of meetings in July to address issues of environmental impact, pedestrian safety, and traffic concerns. But now Chick-fil-A has asked to postpone those meetings, hopefully to address residentsâ concerns. ($)
Hidden Gem: Club 164
Whether youâre sober curious or working through recovery, socializing while sober is no easy feat. Especially in Annapolis. People donât call it a drinking town with a sailing problem for no reason. Enter Club 164, a very chill hangout spot offering a spot for the Annapolis sober community to feel, well, normal and unpressured. The best part is that you can attend a meeting before watching your favorite sports team, or enjoy Trivia Night without the usual descent into inebriated chaos. If youâre trying to navigate life without substances, Club 164 is a good place to land. Find it at 2016 Industrial Drive off Bestgate Road.

Is it Worth it to Hire a Financial Advisor?
When people think of financial planning, they sometimes wonder, âDo I really need a financial advisor? Why pay for one when I can get free advice online?â
Let us ask you: Why would you hire a CPA to do your taxes or a plumber to fix your pipes when thereâs information online to show you how to do it yourself?
The answer is simple: You either donât have the time to do it or you know a professional will do a better job. If you want free, generalized advice, thatâs what youâll get. If you want to help your financial dreams, thatâs where a financial advisor comes in.
For 35 years, Scarborough Capital Management has been helping busy families make smarter financial decisions. We can help you.

Got Gold? đĽ
On Friday, we ran an ad for a cool event at Bloomstone Jewelers, located in the Annapolis Harbour Center. Seems like lots of Scoop readers are looking for ways to offload that old engagement ring, or gold band, or jewelry that was left to you but youâre honestly never going to wear so weâre including it again, just in case you missed Friday. Bloomstoneâs Gold Buying Event allows you to turn your unwanted jewelry into jewelry you actually want. Or something everyone always wants â cold, hard cash. And to be honest, this sounds awesome right now. Make sure you sign up in advance to reserve a spot.
PRSA cancels PR Bazaar đ
Bad news, PR teams. The Public Relations Society of America Chesapeake Chapter announced it is canceling tomorrowâs PR Bazaar. This annual sell-out event offered an opportunity for members of local nonprofits and businesses to get more info about marketing, PR, and communications, and PRSA Chesapeake hopes to continue providing that value through a digital booklet set for release this summer, as well as other events. Watch their website for announcements.

Athlon Sports just dropped its College Football Preseason Magazine with predictions for the 2025 season, and itâs not that weâre pretty pumped to see Navy picked so far ahead of Army, but . . . weâre pretty pumped to see Navy so far ahead of Army. Navy made the 2nd place spot right after Tulane (Army made 5th), a prediction based on factors like how the team played last season and the talent they have this year. Major Navy games to watch for this season, according to Athlon, include USF at home, Navy at Memphis on Thanksgiving night, and as always, Army-Navy.
