🍦Your Father’s Day Game Plan Is Here

Mayoral Candidates Debate, Reader poll: Best place to slurp oysters, Vendors wanted for Oktoberfest...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Celebrities start three kinds of companies these days – booze, cosmetics, and cell phone plans. Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes are channeling their inner Ryan Reynolds to start SmartLess Mobile, where plans without unlimited data (which they say nobody really needs) will cost between $15 and $30 per month.

It’s not a bad plan for getting filthy rich(er). Reynolds netted around $300 million when Mint Mobile sold to T-Mobile in 2024.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Mayoral Candidates Debate

  • Reader poll: Best place to slurp oysters

  • Vendors wanted for Oktoberfest

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Mayoral Candidates Debate

With no Republican candidate in the upcoming mayoral election (yet), Annapolitans have their choice of Democrats Rhonda Pindell-Charles or Jared Littmann as the city’s next leader. And to give voters a better sense of how they would handle issues currently affecting other parts of the country, a panel of journalists recently asked them to debate potential issues based on real-life events. Federal funding and immigration were top of the list.

The evening’s first question involved FEMA’s recent elimination of a federal grant concerning natural disasters.

  • It’s not clear if Annapolis will be affected, but if funding is rescinded, the multi-million dollar City Dock project will be the first hit.

Pindell-Charles said her team was already working on a plan to protect the project, but did not elaborate. Littmann said if funding were revoked, his administration would “unfortunately reengineer and rethink that project.”

Later in the evening, panelists brought up last month’s inclusion of Annapolis in a Homeland Security list of sanctuary cities that are “deliberately obstructing” the enforcement of immigration law. Pindell-Charles stated that Annapolis Police will not “assist ICE nor will they interfere with ICE,” while Littmann said he would be a “law-abiding” mayor who “will follow legal orders and support our Hispanic community.” He disagreed that Annapolis is a sanctuary city.

  • Candidates have through July 28 to file their intent to oppose Pindell-Charles and Littmann, so there’s always the chance of another party entering the race.

If you’d like to be involved in further conversations with civic leaders, the Caucus of African American Leaders has plans to offer city council candidates an opportunity in July. If you’d like to watch the debate or get involved in further meetings, follow the CAAL Facebook page. ($)

Kymberly Taylor releases debut poetry collection 📖

After many years in publishing as a co-founder of Annapolis Home Magazine, Kymberly Taylor made her poetry debut this month with her first collection, Thinandflyingdress. The book is published by DC-based Forest Woods Media, founded by Maryland’s 10th Poet Laureate Grace Cavalieri, who praises Kymberly’s talent for lacing words “together into stunning declarations of sensuality, beauty, and surprise.”

If that got your attention, find Thinandflyingdress on Amazon, or mark your calendar for August 13 at 7 PM, when Kymberly will give a reading at Old Fox Books in Annapolis. (And if you’re a frequent reader of Annapolis Home, you might recognize Scoop writer Dylan’s byline there as well — he’s a longtime writer for them and can vouch for Kym’s stylish flair for words.)

LOCAL BUSINESS

Vendors wanted for Oktoberfest in West Annapolis

Although the RealFeel is 90º today, it’s never too early to start thinking about the incredible fall festivals happening around town. The West Annapolis Business Association certainly is doing just that, as they’re soliciting cool people and businesses for their annual Oktoberfest on September 28. If you have a craft or art business, service-oriented business, or are a food and beverage vendor, they want to hear from you.

P.S. This is always a well-attended event so if you’re looking for assurances that your vendor fee will be worth it, consider yourself assured.

P.P.S. If you love pretzels and beer cheese, Lederhosen, and German-inspired merriment, put this on your calendar.

Poll Results: Where’s your favorite place to slurp oysters?

Considering the number of votes counted, Annapolis clearly has plenty of great places to eat America’s Favorite Bivalve. But top marks from our readers go to Sailor Oyster Bar, with Boatyard Bar and Grill coming in with the most impressive write-in campaign in recent history. While you never need an excuse to have a happy hour, we will remind you that Thursday is essentially Friday eve: want to split a dozen Patty’s Fattys?
