🍦Look inside the Brice House

Boat Show begins today, Halal at Annapolis Mall, Schooner race...

Good morning, Annapolis. Honestly the hardest part of my job is coming up with a fresh clever intro here every day.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Scoop’s Navy football discount returns

  • Halal at Annapolis Mall

  • Schooner racing

Let’s get to it.

—just Ryan Sneddon (Rebecca’s on vacation 🏖️ )

P.S. Happy Birthday to the one, the only. . . Ernie Arizzi.

Scoop tours the Brice House

The James Brice House on East Street is one of the largest and most elegant of Annapolis’ surviving historic homes. In fact, it’s one of the most important surviving structures from all of Colonial America. We had the rare opportunity to go inside this week to give you a sneak peek.

Historic Annapolis has been restoring the property since 2016 and although it may not look like it from the pictures, they’re going to be done soon!

Come with us as we walk through what was surely one of Annapolis’ top social hangouts (for the colonial elite) back in the 1700s.

THE DIGEST

Want to win tickets to the Annapolis Powerboat Show?

Not only did we write the most helpful guide to the Boat Show (especially for rookies). We also want to give you tickets. So it’s time for a giveaway.

Entering is simple. You just have to donate a minimum of $5 to our Annapolis Hope fundraiser. You can read about Annapolis Hope in this Scoop.

To enter, donate at least $5 using this link, email us your receipt ([email protected]), and you’re in. We’ll pick 2 random winners to win 2 tickets each at noon tomorrow (Friday).

Wells Cove story correction

We published an inaccurate story on Monday and want to set the record straight. Here’s what we wrote and what we should have written based on documents provided to us by the plaintiff’s attorney.

  • We wrote: The Blue Heron Cove condos were built on Wells Cove in the 80s. A City Council resolution required a path giving the public access to walk at the cove. No formal agreement was made.

    • Correction: The City Council resolution mentioned was a formal agreement. There was also an easement signed in 1992 that confirms public access.

  • We wrote: Two Eastport residents sued for access in February 2021. That suit was dismissed. An easement agreement was made allowing access to the path but not the water. A second suit was filed and that’s where we are now.

    • Correction: The second suit has been ruled on. It states that the 1992 easement was and is valid. The most recent City Council resolution orders the city to enforce the public water access and remove any impediments to it.

Naval Academy announces Fall 2023 Brigade Commander

Each semester, the Naval Academy elevates one midshipman above the rest – the brigade commander. The highest ranking student on the Yard. But with great power comes great responsibility.

The brigade commander has to maintain brigade efficiency, report deficiencies to the commandant, be accountable for all brigade conduct, and sometimes recommend corrective action.

It’s a high honor. And this fall’s brigade commander is Midshipman 1st Class (senior) Chiara Rappa from Summerfield, FL. This May, she’ll become the first in her family to graduate college. Congratulations, Chiara!

LOCAL BUSINESS

Who wants Halal?

Falafel? Gyro? Take your pick. Baba’s Halal is now open in the Westfield Annapolis dining court. Look for it near Five Guys. The striking black and white storefront will catch your eye immediately.

Baba’s is celebrating its grand opening tomorrow (10/6) and if you show them you’re following them on Instagram, you’ll get $3 off your meal. I just hope my favorite chicken teriyaki place (❤️ Fuji Mama) doesn’t see me in line 🤫

Calling all grassroots leaders

Leadership Anne Arundel is famous for its Flagship Program. But what many people don’t know is that 25 years ago, a Flagship class project created another LAA leadership program.

It’s called Neighborhood Leadership Academy and it equips leaders within communities with the tools they need to improve their entire community’s quality of life. Part of the secret sauce is improving communication and creating consensus. But the rest? You’ll just have to sign up to find out.

NLA is a six-month program with one 6-hour meeting per month. The first session is in late January 2024. Oh yeah, and NLA is 100% funded by grants so there’s no cost for participants. Apply here by December 31.

Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race watch party

For over 30 years, schooners from all over have gathered in October to race over 100 miles down the Chesapeake Bay. It’s a fundraiser for Bay conservation, but like any good fundraiser, it’s also wicked good fun.

Over a dozen schooners are registered – including Annapolis’ own Woodwind and the venerable Pride of Baltimore II. The race starts at noon sharp in Annapolis today and if you want to watch, the Annapolis Maritime Museum is taking their skipjack (not to be confused with a schooner) to the starting line.

Tickets include drinks and lunch from the delicious Bread and Butter Kitchen. Need last-minute plans? This is it!
